Justin Timberlake and Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have led this year’s MTV Video Music Awards with six nominations each. The artists will go head-to-head in Best Direction and Best Editing categories as well as the coveted Video of the Year nod.
Timberlake’s ‘Mirrors’ also picked up Video of the Year, Best Male Video, Best Pop Video and Best Editing while ‘Suit & Tie’ featuring Jay-Z grabbed Best Collaboration as well as Best Direction. He has already won seven Moonmen.
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis are probably hoping to take at least one of these trophies home on Aug. 25, when the awards air. ‘Thrift Shop’ is in the running for Video of the Year, and ‘Can’t Hold Us’ is nominated for Best Hip Hop Video, Best Cinematography, Best Direction and Best Editing. Also, their latest, powerful track, ‘Same Love,’ is nominated for Best Video with a Social Message.
As far as Best Hip-Hop Video, the nominees aren’t too surprising. Drake‘s ‘Started From the Bottom,’ ‘Swimming Pools’ by Kendrick Lamar, Macklemore’s ‘Can’t Hold Us,’ J. Cole‘s ‘Power Trip’ featuring Miguel and ‘F—in’ Problems’ by A$AP Rocky with Drake, 2 Chainz and Kendrick Lamar all received a nod. If the last song wins, Drake and Lamar will still walk away with a Moonman even though it’s not for their own solo work.
Bruno Mars picked up four nominations including Video of the Year for ‘Locked Out of Heaven’ and Best Choreography for his latest single, ‘Treasure.’ Robin Thicke is also in the running with three nods for his hyped up, yet somewhat controversial ‘Blurred Lines’ visual.
The 2013 VMAs air live from Brooklyn’s Barclays Center on Sun., Aug. 25th at 9pm ET/PT.
